Security Guard

Program Description:

As an individual hired to protect people, property and assets, a Security Guard can engage in challenging and varied duties including: monitoring and operating alarm, closed circuit television and control access systems; patrolling, dispatching, alarm response and investigation; crowd control, report writing and providing directions and information to clients and visitors as needed.
Course Description:
In 2005, the Private Security and Investigative Services Act was enacted to enhance public safety and help professionalize Ontario's private security industry. The basic Training and Testing Regulation for security guards and private investigators came into effect April 15, 2010. All new applicants must undergo a basic training program and pass a test of their knowledge before they can apply for a security guard and/or private investigator licence. Transitions College of Business and Career Studies’ Security Guard Course holds to the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services’ ordered curriculum for Licensed Security Guard training. Once training is completed, a candidate consults with the Ministry to take his/her test (at a Ministry-approved location). After passing the test, the candidate may apply to receive his/her licence. Note: Since July 16, 2010, all security guards are required to pass the Ministry test before applying for their licence renewal. Those planning to take the Ministry test may prepare for it by taking Transitions College’s Security Guard Course.
