Food Service Worker

The duties of the food service worker cover the whole range of food preparation, storing, preparing, and serving, as well as dishwashing and kitchen cleaning. Major Responsibilities include quantity food preparation and safe food handling techniques; food service sanitation and safety procedures; proper use, storage and maintenance of institutional kitchen equipment; participation in food service systems including purchasing, receiving, production, inventory, delivery and service; as well as nutrition and special diets.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience preparing and serving food in a long-term care or similar facility
  • Food Service Worker Certificate or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Ability to read and write and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff and clients
  • Ability to operate and move various equipment and perform various cleaning duties
  • Willingness to work weekends, shifts and holidays as assigned
  • Ability to multi task and prioritize
  • Good detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to provide service that enhances the dignity and respects the cultural and racial diversity of clients and staff
  • Fundamental knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, the Sanitation Code and other related legislation
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Physically able to perform duties
