Medix College’s Medical Laboratory Technician/Assistant program immerses you in the exciting world of the medical laboratory, which offers a unique combination of technical skills and job satisfaction working with a diverse population within the healthcare field. In just over a year, you will learn how to conduct a variety of routine medical laboratory tests.

Graduates will also be eligible to write both the provincial (OSMT) and national (CSMLS) exams to gain industry certification in the field. Through our notable partnerships with several hospitals and laboratories across the GTA, students are provided real-world experience during their field placement., making Medix’s Medical Laboratory Technician/Assistant program an ideal choice.

About The Program

What You Will Learn In The Classroom

The theory component of the MLTA program consists of anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, professionalism & ethics, laboratory safety, hematology & immunohematology, ECG fundamentals, clinical chemistry, urinalysis & body fluids, histology & cytology, microbiology, laboratory math & analytical quality assurance, communications, CPR and more.

 

What You Will Learn In The Labs

A Medical Laboratory Technician works under the direction of a Medical Laboratory Technologist and assists in various clinical laboratory procedures including but not limited to:

  • Providing patient reception and documentation
  • Collecting blood, tissue, and other samples from patients
    • Appropriately handling and distributing specimens to be analyzed by other members of the laboratory team
  • Logging patient samples and prepare them for testing
  • Cleaning and maintaining medical laboratory equipment
  • Conduct routine laboratory tests and sample analyses
  • Perform electrocardiograms (ECG’s), applying an understanding of heart activity and heart electrical conductivity
  • Positioning Holter monitors
  • Performing quality assurance of testing techniques
  • Maintaining a safe working environment

TPI-MAS helps students recognize the choices they have in life and how to control how they think to change the way they live their lives.
