Medical Office Assistant

If you’re drawn to helping people, but you don’t want to spend years in medical school, consider becoming a Medical Office Assistant. With less than a year of training, you could start a brand new career on the administrative, patient-facing side of a clinical setting. What’s more, there’s room for growth. You can advance in your career, or continue your training while gaining experience in the medical field.

If you have good people skills, can remain calm and collected, and are organized, then begin your career training to become a Medical Office Assistant.

Become Qualified in Medical Office Assisting

The Medical Office Assistant program at Oxford College prepares you to find employment in the growing healthcare sector. As a Medical Office Assistant, you will greet people arriving at a medical office, hospital, or other establishments. You’ll also direct visitors to the appropriate person or service, answer and forward telephone calls, take messages, schedule appointments, and perform other clerical duties.

During the Medical Office Assistant program, you’ll learn how to:

  • Greet patients and schedule appointments using a manual or computerized system, direct them to the appropriate contacts or services, and provide general information in person and by phone
  • Receive and record payments for services
  • Interview patients to obtain and process information required to provide hospital and medical services

Countless Career Opportunities

Graduates are employed by hospitals, medical and dental offices, and other offices throughout the public and private sectors.

Upon completion of the program, graduates may find employment as:

  • Medical Office Assistant
  • Medical Secretary
  • Medical Office Administrator
  • Medical Billing Specialist
  • Clinical Assistant
  • Medical Transcriptionist

While Medical Office Assisting is a gratifying career in and of itself, you also have room to progress if you choose to. Many Medical Office Assistants go on to become Medical Office Managers or take on other supervisory roles (which comes with a graduated pay scale) once they have gained some experience. Likewise, you may choose to use Medical Office Assisting as a stepping stone, pursuing further education while you get experience in the medical field.
